An Italian at Flanders
SPECIAL NOTE: The organizers add two climbs to the race route, bringing the total to 13.
Fabio Roscioli dominated the early part of the 74th Tour of Flanders. On a bright sunny Belgian day Roscioli, along with Chris Scharmin and Noel Szostek, held the lead for 130 km until Rudy Dhaenens, Michel Dernies, Giuseppe Calcaterra, Per Pedersen, Andres Jarmann, Alan Peiper and Italian champion Moreno Argentin caught him.
Laurent Fignon made a strong bridge up to the group and joined the breakaway. But as the animated Frenchman was complaining about the lack of support in the group, Moreno Argentin and Rudy Dhaenens managed to slip away from the group. The winning move had been made. Over the final two climbs, Muur de Grammont and Bosberg, the breakaway drove a pace that would not be caught.
Into the streets of Meerbeke/Ninove Moreno Argentin easily beat Rudy Dhaenens in the sprint to gain the prestigious Ronde victory.
SPECIAL NOTE: Argentin scored the first Italian victory at Flanders since Dino Zandegu in 1967.
